Avery Funkhouser, MD, is a first-year pathology resident at Yale School of Medicine with a focus on precision oncology and medical education. He earned his MD from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville, where he served as Class President and contributed to institutional policy as a member of the Program Assessment and Evaluation Committee. His leadership emphasized assessment reform and student wellness, laying the groundwork for his continued interest in academic medicine.
During medical school, Avery was selected for the NIH Medical Research Scholars Program, working with Dr. Jack Shern to design and lead a study investigating the oncologic role of the MYOD1 L122R mutation in rhabdomyosarcoma. He has also presented research on glycobiology and galectin biomarkers in cancer in collaboration with Dr. Anna Blenda, including at the 2023 AACR Annual Meeting.
Before medical school, Avery earned his BS in Biology from Bob Jones University, graduating summa cum laude, where he managed the biology laboratory, directed peer mentoring, and served as Vice President of the Pre-Med Association. He subsequently taught high school science in Illinois, an experience that reinforced his commitment to teaching as a professional value. Originally from central Pennsylvania, Avery brings a background spanning research, teaching, and leadership to his medical career.
